MLK Day Celebration

The Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation’s MLK Day event will feature Renée Graham, Boston Globe Associate editor and Columnist as the keynote speaker on Monday, January 15^th. After her talk there will be time for audience Q&A followed by an intermission with light refreshments.

In the second segment Renée will have a one-on-one conversation with Michea McCaffery, Chair of the Gloucester Racial Justice Team (GRJT). They will discuss the findings from the recent GRJT survey of Black, Indigenous, Persons of Color (BIPOC) Gloucester residents. After the conversation there will be another time for audience Q&A followed again by an intermission with light refreshments.

The third segment features a performance by renowned vocal artist Gordon Michaels, joined by a small ensemble, presenting music based upon the Black experience and in honor of Dr. King. After the concert, the lights in the Meetinghouse will be turned down as we listen to the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his own voice via audio recording.

When leaving the event, audience members are invited to come upstairs in the entrance house to pull the rope and ring the Paul Revere bell in celebration of Dr. King’s birthday and renew hope for his vision for racial equality and freedom to fulfill the promises of the U.S. Constitution.
